Are you walking on eggshells?

In Australia, domestic violence is a crime punished by law. Violence isn’t always physical, it can also be verbal, emotional, sexual or financial. No matter your circumstances, domestic abuse against women, men and non-binary people is never okay – and it is never your fault.

Find out what’s real and feel empowered to reclaim control.

Domestic violence can happen to anyone regardless of age, race, gender, faith, sexual orientation or socioeconomic background. Leaving any relationship is hard, and it can feel impossible in an abusive situation.

As advocates against family and domestic violence, this is your platform to get access to information that can help you.

Signs of an abusive relationship

Domestic violence – also called domestic abuse or intimate partner violence – is defined as a pattern of behaviour in a relationship that is used to create an imbalance of power. These include behaviours that threaten, intimidate, humiliate, manipulate, frighten or injure someone.

Often escalating from verbal abuse to physical abuse, domestic violence can also have severe mental health consequences.

Types of violence and abuse are:

  • Coercive control
  • Financial abuse
  • Physical violence
  • Sexual assault
  • Emotional abuse
  • Verbal abuse
  • Technology facilitated abuse

Individuals in abusive relationships are often afraid of their partner and experience low self-worth, depression and feelings of helplessness. Victims also describe life as “walking on eggshells.”

Your first step to breaking free is recognizing that your relationship is abusive. You may be inclined to believe that you are also to blame for the abuse. It is never your fault.

From understanding what is normal to safety planning, to getting in touch with a lawyer that can assist you with legal aid, and counsellors and psychologists that can help you heal from trauma, we can help you get through this.

Always remember, you are not alone.

Independence is invaluable.

We understand that you might not want to leave your partner, you just want the violence to stop. But the reality is that handling violence is not the answer. No individual should have to experience and live through abuse from another person.

Our most Frequently
Asked Questions

How much domestic violence is there in Australia?

Domestic violence is one of the most significant public health issues in Australia. While it can affect anyone, it is distinctly linked to gender and power, disproportionately affecting women and children. The elderly, women with disabilities and temporary visa holders are also more susceptible to abuse.

On average, one woman a week and one man a month are killed due to family violence (Australian Institute of Criminology 2018–19).

When did domestic violence become a crime in Australia?

In Australia, domestic violence is defined by the Family Law Act 1975. The law is different in each state, but they are similar.

The orders are called something different in each state.

Another important thing is that any parenting order made by a Court overrides a domestic violence order. So if the DVO says you can’t go within 50m of a person, you can for the purpose of, for example, collecting children under a parenting order.

How to prevent domestic violence in Australia?

Education and access to support are key. Check out our resources to find out more about domestic violence and how to recognise it, from its more subtle actions to controlling behaviours. If your life is in danger, call 000 now.

How to help a victim of domestic violence?

If you suspect someone you know is a victim of domestic violence, offer them support. Remind them that they are not alone and that you are ready to listen and help whenever they are ready.

Listen without judging them and never blame a victim. It’s never their fault.

Give them resources, such as 1800RESPECT and this website.

How to become an advocate for domestic violence victims?

If you want to help survivors of domestic violence, you can:

  • Donate – victims often leave their homes quickly, leaving behind their belongings.
  • Provide childcare – survivors need to attend job interviews, counselling sessions, legal appointments and more to get their lives back on track
  • Volunteer at a domestic violence call centre to help victims find resources

These are just some of the few things you can do to help.

Domestic violence: why do they stay?

Looking from the outside, it might seem like an obvious question. But abusers go to extreme lengths to prevent the victims from leaving. Leaving an abuser is the most dangerous time for a victim of domestic violence because reclaiming agency disrupts the power and control their partner has asserted over them.

How to heal from domestic violence?

At AFLAS, we have a network of professional counsellors and psychologists that can help you with recovery.
